Evaluating a Domain Extension for Business

A practical framework for choosing a TLD that supports your business goals.

Trust & credibility

.comHighestGlobal businesses, consumer brands, e-commerce

.netHigh (tech heritage)Infrastructure, networking, SaaS
.io / .ai / .devHigh (tech audience)Startups, developer tools, AI companies
.coMedium-highStartups, "company" branding
New gTLDs (.app, .shop, .tech)MediumNiche businesses, descriptive branding
Restricted ccTLDsHigh (local)Local market dominance
Open ccTLDs (.tv, .me)MediumSpecific verticals (video, personal)

Email deliverability

  • Reputation is per-domain, not per-TLD — but some TLDs have higher spam ratios historically.
  • .com, .org, .net — neutral, well-understood.
  • New gTLDs — initially scrutinised more; warm up slowly.
  • ccTLDs — local ISPs may prefer local TLDs.
  • Always set up SPF, DKIM, DMARC regardless of TLD.

SEO considerations

  • Google treats all TLDs equally for ranking — no inherent boost for .com.
  • ccTLDs = strong geo-targeting signal (good for local, bad for global).
  • Use hreflang + Search Console for multi-regional gTLD sites.
  • Keyword in TLD (.shop, .tech) — no direct ranking benefit, but may improve CTR.

Brand protection

Register your brand in:

  1. .com (non-negotiable for global businesses).
  2. Relevant ccTLDs for current/future markets.
  3. .net, .org (defensive).
  4. Category-relevant new gTLDs (.app for apps, .dev for dev tools).
  5. Common typos if budget allows.

Use a single registrar for unified management, auto-renew, and DNS.

Legal & compliance

  • Trademark clearinghouse — register your mark to get sunrise/priority access to new gTLDs.
  • UDRP — uniform dispute policy for gTLDs; ccTLDs vary.
  • Local presence — some ccTLDs require a local entity; factor in legal costs.
  • Data residency — some countries require WHOIS data to stay in-country.

Decision matrix

Score each candidate TLD 1–5 on each criterion, weight by importance:
